Battery Point community life reopens
During the weekend of 7 and 8 August 2020, Battery Point community life opened up after many months of social isolation. Three events took place in the community.
On Saturday afternoon and evening, the Battery Point Twilight Series Nova Muse Festival took place in the Community Hall. Mystery of Mandolin was performed in the early afternoon by celebrated Tasmanian musician Luke Plum, who captivated the audience with a selection of traditional melodies.
This was followed by Drama and Jealousy, a selection of pieces from the vaudeville era, performed magnificently by Johannes Fritzsch on electric piano and Sue Collins on violin.
In the evening, under candlelight, Sue Collins performed Bach’s Partita no. 2 in d minor. This was a magical experience, memorable both for the virtuosity of Sue’s playing and the delightful ambience in the Hall.
Saturday afternoon saw the re-opening of Annick’s Antiques by local identity Annick Thomas. Her much loved business had closed temporarily to move premises.
The well-attended event featured a sculptural exhibition by Kathryn Hodges as well as lively conversation and sumptuous refreshments provided by Annick.
It is good to see local businesses being supported by the community, especially as the trading environment remains challenging.
Sunday morning marked the first live service in many months at St George’s Church.
Those in attendance greatly enjoyed being back together as a congregation and were given a tour of the superb renovation of the building by Rev. Victor Shaw following the service.
We hope that the Covid-19 situation remains stable in Tasmania so that more community events can take place in the near future.
