On the weekend of 16 and 17 May, 118 photographs in the 2026 Battery Point Community Association Photographic Competition were on display in the Community Hall.

Photographs addressed the theme ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ in a variety of fascinating and creative ways. A record 33 photographers throughout Hobart and beyond participated in the event.

Entries were judged by people’s choice and 496 votes were cast by viewers. The result was extremely close and not decided until the final hour.

The winners were presented with their prizes at a delightful ceremony with accompanying drinks on Sunday afternoon. The winners were:

Oliver won first prize with the three tawny frogmouths
Kate Richards was second with a photo of three dogs
Carmel Johnson was third with a study of a wombat
Lynden Leppard was highly commended with a shearer’s work
Caroline Van Riet was highly commended with a study of an insect
Sara was highly commended for a photo of a seal
Bill Lark was highly commended for consistent high quality

Overall, the event made a profit of $768.40, which will be contributed to the Hall Roof Replacement Project.

Thanks go to Gay Duffield, Len Spaans, Pam Powell and Charles Morgan who managed the competition, and to Andrew Edwards, Jenny Morgan and Eve Morris for their valuable assistance.

We would like to acknowledge Marylouise Brammer who once again designed a beautiful poster to promote the competition. We are already considering themes for 2027 and ideas from community members would be most welcome. We look forward to more local entries and more young photographers next year.

Many of the entries are highlighted below. Most are original files, some are scanned. Click on the thumbnail to view the photo in full size. If your entry is missing or you would like your scanned version replaced with an original file, please contact us.
