38 Kelly Street – Korrunah
James Kelly’s 1834 Subdivision and the Colonial History of No. 38 Kelly Street Hobart
This story is by Battery Point resident Robert Noga.
Heather and Robert Noga purchased 38 Kelly Street, Battery Point in 2019, and moved in following an extensive restoration and extension, in May 2022. Deb Speden left Memorials of Titles to the property, going back to 1842. As a retired civilian and military lawyer, with a long interest in history, Robert decided to research the property’s Colonial owners, going back to Knopwood’s sale to James Kelly, in 1828. He researched Kelly’s 1834 subdivision of “Kelly’s Farm” and the purchasers at Auction. In researching the ownership of No. 38 Kelly Street, from Master Mariners Lawrence and John Scott McArthur, and ship’s Captain and Licensed Victualler, Robert Geary, he discovered a rich trove of lives well lived and documented. He discovered that a distant relation was McArthur’s wife. They built the home he now resides in
Robert would appreciate copies of any photos of Jane McArthur and Robert Geary snr, his wife Sarah, son Arthur Geary, and the McArthur and Geary families more generally. If you have any relevant materials or would like to use the research below in another work or publish it elsewhere, please contact us and we will pass on your details to Robert. Robert would also welcome any input to correct errors and omissions.
The History also contains advice on how to research the owners of each Lot forming Kelly’s subdivision.
